A TV reporter, who is presented as an expert, says that investors are getting out of the gold market because it is not backed by anything! Gold and silver suffered big losses this week, but not because of a change in market fundamentals. It was because the commodities exchange sharply reduced the extent to which speculators can acquire gold or silver contracts with borrowed money instead of cash. Thousands of speculators had to sell a portion of their holdings to raise the money to protect the balance. This sudden dump caused a sharp decline in price. Investors who lost money when Wall Street crashed last week also had to sell gold and silver (if they held any) to cover their leveraged losses in stocks and bonds.
The only people hurt were speculators who play the market with borrowed money. Investors with cash did exceedingly well. Now that the sell off is complete, the price of gold and silver once again will move upward as a mirror image of the decline in the purchasing power of the dollar and other fiat currencies.

Tuesday 25 October 2011 - I visited 'Occupy London' at St. Paul’s Cathedral. I was basically in support of the protesters. It was silly that St. Paul’s was closed since I had wanted to climb up to the whispering gallery and out onto the outside balcony at the top of the dome. I signed a visitors book to add my support, took photos and quick sketches. I noticed a spontaneous gathering by the steps at the front and walked round to watch and observe, sketching as I could. There were two young men, one holding part of a megaphone while the other made announcements through it. I stood before them to sketch the scene. Suddenly, I was aware of voices behind me requesting I move or sit down. I ignored them since it was public pavement and I, like the protesters, was entitled to stand where I wanted. Next the mega phone man was asking me to move or sit down and then an Asian chap approached me to ask me to move. I stood my ground and stated verbally I was entitled to stand where ever I wished and since when were protesters the legislators of who could stand where? I was disappointed that these freedom protesters were now telling me what I could and could not do. I finished my sketch and challenged them that if I were breaking a law to call a policeman and have me arrested. I closed my book and walked away. What a bunch of hypocrites. As I walked away, a woman bystander had obviously witnessed the altercation and looked at me sympathetically. “So much for freedom”, I commented. She nodded her head in agreement.

Monday 07 June 2010 - Delivered 3 paintings to Three Mills Studios, London E3 for The Threadneedle Prize judges to look at among hundreds of others. I took a couple of photos, but was soon told not to do this or go there.

Monday 14 June 2010 - Lyndon collected my 3 paintings from London. They were not selected by The Threadneedle Prize judges boo-hoo. Apparently, 1.275 artists submitted more than 2.175 artworks of which 46 were selected. This has cost at least £335 and I doubt I will enter competitions in future; an interesting experience.
Last night a friend told me Sir Thomas Lovell (1449-1524), a close aid of Henry VIII, lived at nearby Rushford Hall. Local gossip suggests Henry VIII hunted in the local area and would stay at Gasthorpe hunting lodge. Allegedly, in those days before steam, rail and road transport, the marshes were cleared to allow flat bottom boats to reach as far as the lodge. The presence of Lovell may give credence to the tale.

Tuesday 10 August 2010 - I encountered a most unpleasant pair in a car, probably between 8-8.30pm. I was walking out of Coney Weston, past the entrance to Coney Weston Hall. A layer of mist was settling over the US WWII memorial and the 4 cross ways. I was using a rolled umbrella like a walking stick since it had been raining, yet had stopped. Rucksack on my back and gardening secateurs in my jacket pocket. I was heading to Heaven to cut back some brambles.

There had been few, perhaps no cars pass me. I had heard some wheel-screeching in the far distance behind me, as if coming from the direction of the village - but paid little heed to it. Suddenly I heard a car approaching and slowing down as it approached me. It slowed down to almost a standstill and I turned to look, presuming some one required directions or knew me. 2 young men, aged 18-25, in the front with the passenger side window down. The passenger asked me if I wanted a lift. I declined. They both kept by my side so I asked if I knew them. The passenger had a nose ring and earring, short hair, casual dress, perhaps jeans. The driver had a green or blue round neck jumper and perhaps jeans. They both just looked, perhaps made the odd inaudible comment and were smiling, very happy with themselves.

I turned back to the forward direction and continued walking. They were following just behind. I stopped, turned and looked. They were smiling/laughing with each other. I turned and continued to walk. I then heard the car still behind and slowly moving up onto the curb and footpath. I could hear them following just behind me. I stopped, turned and looked. By now I had the secateurs in my hand. They drove slowly right up to my legs, the bumper just about touching my shins. I then saw a second car arriving on the horizon and began walking round to the driver's side. The driver noticed the second car in his mirror and sped off. They screeched across the 4 cross ways and I think they turned round and returned to the 4 cross ways before moving off. I had run into the woods that back the US WWII memorial so could not clearly see which way they went. I do not think they returned to Coney Weston.

The car was an estate like a Peugeot and perhaps silver or light coloured. Not red. There was a blanket or some kind of material in the back estate part. The number plate could have been CRF1 ??? I was disappointed at how little detail I could immediately recall. I was so angry afterward - they really invaded my private space and I considered what I might do with the secateurs - I seriously began thinking it's me or them.... that is how intimidated I felt.

I did not hear the whole programme, but the likes of Feargal Sharkey are out-moded; copyright is an unworkable concept. Open source information must be the way forward.

Gresham's: the school for spies

Sir: It is hardly surprising that MI5 wished to investigate W H Auden in connection with the flight of Guy Burgess in May 1951. The story of Burgess's last-minute telephone calls to Stephen Spender, in search of an urgent conversation with Auden, was exposed by the British press as long ago as June 1951. Burgess appears to have intended to use the idea of a trip to visit Auden on Ischia as just one of his elaborate cover stories to mask his disappearance over the weekend of 26-27 May.

Cahal Milmo's article ("Revealed: How Auden may have helped Burgess to flee Britain", 2 March) neglects to mention the schoolboy connections of the main protagonists in the story. Auden and (briefly) Spender were both pupils at Gresham's School in Norfolk, as was Burgess's partner-in-flight, Donald Maclean. Indeed, MI5 would have been well advised to trawl through Gresham's School's pupil registers of the 1920s and 1930s. Cedric Belfrage was an agent of Stalin's NKVD operating in the US, from where he became the first Briton to be deported for "un-American activities", in 1955. Maclean's school friend James Klugmann was a leading Communist proselytiser and talent-spotter for the NKVD at Cambridge in the 1930s. Another Greshamian, Bernard Floud, committed suicide in 1967, following MI5 interrogations in connection with his suspected involvement in an Oxford spy ring.

Sunday 18 April 2010 - I watched the first British election TV debate on Thursday. I immediately concluded Lib-Dem leader Nick Clegg 'won'. It seems the general consensus agreed with me. A friend suggested to me during the week that Thatcher took on the power of labour unions. Today's issue is the power of banks. I came across this text called The Hazard Circular of 1862:
"Slavery is likely to be abolished by the war power and all chattel slavery abolished. This I and my European friends are in favor of, for slavery is but the owning of labor and carries with it the care of the laborers, while the European plan, led on by England, is that capital shall control labor by controlling wages. The great debt that the capitalists will see to it is made out of the war, must be used as a means to control the volume of money. To accomplish this the bonds must be used as a banking basis. We are now waiting for the Secretary of the Treasury to make this recommendation to Congress. Saturday 13 March 2010 - I had not intended to vote for any of the 3 mainstream parties at the upcoming election, however, now that Anna Arrowsmith, managing director of adult entertainment firm Easy on the Eye Productions, has declared her standing as a candidate for the Lib-Dems, I am very tempted to vote for the Lib-Dems. Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe told the Times newspaper:
"It is entirely inappropriate that someone involved in that sort of business should be a candidate, but it is up to the Liberal Democrats. Ultimately, it is up to the electorate to pass judgment."
Human sexuality could be acknowledged and celebrated rather than consistently be branded as a sin. Good luck Ms. Arrowsmith.

Wednesday 26 August 2009 - There was a police car at The Swan on my arrival this afternoon. Local village residents have submitted a protest against the planned Frogstock Festival. Oh dear, why can people be such party poopers? Barbara and Jimmy at The Swan are trying to generate activity and business to allow the pub to keep going and maintain a vital centre point for village community life. I bet the moaners and groaners do little but sit in front of the TV most nights. It's life!

Friday 28 August 2009 - I bought paint rollers and trays this morning for a secret mission. I also found myself under a bridge measuring and marking out in preparation for the secret mission ha ha. Finished the Robert Clarke portrait. Here it is in the back dining room with Churchill in the front lounge....

Friday 10 July 2009 - I arrived at the Charles Burrell School in Thetford on Tuesday to deliver a blank canvas to the art department and on Wednesday introduced myself to some of the students. Monday 13 July 2009 - Roy and Lee began preparing the garden wall and painting it white. I had a meeting at 5.30pm with the garden club to meet some of the group. Otherwise, I continue with the Charles Burrell portrait.....

Wednesday 15 July 2009 - Spent the first couple of hours negotiating road works in Thetford and finding paint for my project wall. Managed to start the wall with a few children from the school. Continued with the Charles Burrell portrait. Hello Becky - this is an up-date!

Tuesday 21 July 2009 - The wall is done and the portrait nearly done.

I varnished the wall with a concrete sealant Friday about 1pm and then the heavens opened. However, I have been to visit the wall today and the paint is still there!

Yesterday I returned the photographed and varnished Thomas Paine 1737-1809 portrait to hang it on the wall at Thetford Library. Job done.

Monday 27 July 2009 - Old school friend Phil dropped into Bury on a brief trip from Chicago. We visited our old school Thurston Upper, now called Thurston Community College. It was sad to see the security fencing around the school and all weather outdoor sports field shut off to the public. Phil stated that the local school field back in his neck of the woods near Chicago is always open to public use.

We visited the portrait of the Queen at St. Edmundsbury Cathedral. The painting is not well placed and my birthdate is incorrectly given as 1956. I look pretty good for 53!

Friday 27 February 2009 - Went to Norwich this evening at the invitation of a friend. Attended a free form dance group. Fascinating experience. 5 Rhythms Dance comprised of 2 musicians on hand drum, violin, guitar and sound effects accompanying a room of people dancing and moving in any which way they wishes; a disco stripped down to bare essentials. I slipped out at half time to find a good pub, though my search was in vain and I only found pubs rather than a really good one. However, the free form dance group was an interesting concept....

Tuesday 03 March 2009 - Visited Thetford Gaol. Sue has purchased and spent the last couple of years renovating the old gaol. We discussed my exhibiting and painting there perhaps in June or July.

Was discussing stuff with a friend. I mentioned the 2012 London Olympic logo and how people didn't know what it was meant to say or symbolise....

Here's one way to arrange the elements....

Some one was presumably significantly paid to create this logo; a logo for a global platform. Extraordinary.

Saturday 07 March 2009 - The economy is surely going to experience meltdown; an expression that has cropped up in front of my eyes a few times recently and appears sadly apt. The government here and there are apparently sanctioning the printing of money based on no value or production. It simply does not makes for common sense. My concern is we are risking a situation for some kind of fascism; social chaos and subsequent overt control. Here is an example of some of the voices that are expressing some common sense....

Sunday 15 March 2009 - Took 'Frank at 92' to Thetford Gaol. A TV company are shooting there on Monday and he proprietor required a painting on the wall. 'Frank' works on the local Elveden Estate and seemed an appropriate Norfolk association. It's interesting to have a painting in the gaol which Thomas Paine grew up so close to and helped formed his life philosophy:

Sunday 05 April 2009 - Yesterday I received a response from The Queen's Correspondence Officer thanking me for the Cd My Name is Edmund which she is passing onto the Right Honourable Andy Burnham, MP, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Today Lyndon arrived with his Luton van to transport paintings and materials to Cornhill Walk for a 3rd exhibition starting tomorrow.

The weather was lovely today - sunshine. I've been sneezing a good deal though; hay fever hangover from childhood. It only comes upon me in the Suffolk countryside it seems.

Monday 19 January 2009 - My friend Ben Platts-Mills has an on going project called STARCH and my mother composed her concise version of the theory. I'm not sure what to do about it immediately, but here are the concise words...

STARCH
Start Taxing All Refined Carbo Hydrates (NOW)

Whole-grain, for instance wheat, is digestible. It nourishes the body giving energy.

A refined grain – one whereby the outer casing including vitamin B, has been removed, must take nutrients including vitamin B, from the body in order to digest it.

So, each time we eat a white-refined grain e.g. white flour or rice, we deplete the body of essential nutrients; we in fact damage ourselves.

If food is to be taxed, why not tax the damaging stuff – refined grains – and not tax the whole grains?

So, brown, whole-wheat pasta, whole-wheat flour or things made from or with whole foods, would become tax-free while refined or white versions, would be taxed; the more refined the food, heavier the tax.

Tuesday 27 January 2009 - Richard form The Shrubbery and Baz joined me at St. Edmund's Catholic Primary School to sound record the children singing 'My Name is Edmund'.

After the school we returned to The Shrubbery Studio with a dozen children to guarantee we had a good recording of the children. As it turned out, both recording sessions were successful.

Wednesday 28 January 2009 - BBC Radio Suffolk announced our song recording yesterday as a local news headline on this morning's Mark Murphy's Show. They broadcast a 5 minute feature just before 9am. Music teacher Anna came across really well and the kids singing sounded great. The Mark Murphy people seemed to like the song and were beginning to hum it on air.

Monday 27 October 2008 - Listening to Eddie Mair on BBC Radio PM discussing a recent controversy surrounding Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross leaving inappropriate messages on actor Andrew Sach's Telephone answer machine. PM have played a recorded segment of the offending message in which Brand references The Daily Mail newspaper once supporting Hitler and now complaining about a telephone message. Some comparison, though indeed, he has a point. If the BBC will not support a realistic investigation into 9/11 why should we give a f--- about a telephone message? Common decency? I'm afraid common decency left the building a long time ago. I find Brand crass and Ross grossly over paid, but that does not excuse the hypocrisy of the BBC, The Daily Mail or the mainstream media in general; not that they give a stuff what I think.

Friday 11 April 2008 - I went with Ugur Buyukakgul of Gursu Shipping went to Topkai SarayiMuzesi to initiate a visit to my studio to certify my paintings were indeed my paintings before being shipped out of Turkiye. We initially met a stern face for reasons I did not fully understand, but the charm of Ugur successfully negotiated an appointment for a vist on Monday.

Monday 31 December 2007 - Arrived at Ataturk Airport this evening to be met by perhaps a few hundred Turks at the Arrivals Gate. They were from the lower income bracket of society, many women wearing headscarves, long, ankle length dull coloured coats and including many children. I deduced they were awaiting relatives and friends returning from the annual Mecca Hajj. I just don't get it. Turkıye seems to be getting more conservative and more religious and this is one of the reasons I intend to close down the NPP studio in Istanbul and relocate to the UK by Spring.

At home I downloaded confirmation that The Ciragan Kempinski are not inviting me to exhibit there in June. They, like The Galerist in Istiklal Caddesi, are implementing a 'Turkish only' policy; to have an exhibition at such venues you must have a Turkish passport. I cannot sympathise with this narrow minded un-international attitude and affirms my decision to leave is the correct one. Last December I raised money for the Leukaemia Foundation at The Ciragan, yet this year they do not want me. Their choice. I shall not be collaborating with The Ciragan in any capacity until this ridiculous policy is reversed.

Before the midnight hour I listened to a programme on BBC Radio 4 Shifting Meridians: a tale of time (from Sunday 21 May 2006) whereby explorer Benedict Allen heads to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich - 0 degrees longitude - to try to solve the riddles of the world time-zone map.
Over 100 years of international political intrigue and manoeuvring have left us with an oddly jagged vast jigsaw puzzle. In 1884 The Greenwich Meridian was agreed on as the prime meridian, centre of the world time zone map, as the globe was divided into 24 convenient, equal-size segments. Who could argue with the logic?
But it wasn't long before the map began to provide the perfect stage for international political manoeuvring and global nose-thumbing as countries divvied up the globe and chose their own time zones. Russia opted for 11, the US eight, and to remind its subjects where the power lay, China decided to impose just one single time zone - Beijing time in the east in place of the five it should have. India snubbed its former rulers by opting to be five and a half hours ahead of GMT. What's with the quarter-hour differences? And what is that extraordinary dogleg on the international date line which hauls a group of South Pacific islands back from tomorrow to today?

Monday 29 October 2007 - Yesterday I met Phil Stevens from Australia. We met at London's Marquee Club maybe 17 years ago; he was working the house and stage lights while I was one of the club's resident DJ's. It was around the time of Blur's first gig at The Marquee. He's visiting Istanbul with Lenise and took his film camera to Taksim this evening to see The Eyes beaming out to commemorate this Turkish national day...Gokce was also out tonight with the NPP Maker Arts film camera.

Sunday 04 November 2007 - I've been to Netsel Marmaris Marina with Serin from Art & Life to open Marmaris? Yeah!, film a little more for the Learning Turkish project, paint another wall and make silly jumping poses for photographs...My first visit to Marmaris in the summer was too busy and noisy. However, this was a different season and much more peaceful. It coincided with the Marmaris Yacht Regatta, everyone at the marina was warm and helpful I had a pleasant introduction to journalist and writer Azer Bortacina. I believe the exhibition and wall mural were very positively received. I didn't have time to look at my Turkish notes, but I did speak Turkish with people.

Saturday 24 November 2007 - Istanbul Cow Parade auction at the Lutfi Kirdar ICEC. Nihat and the crew from Tepe Nautilus were there at 7am. My Moo Gaz cow with balloon was displayed very close to my Ataturk Gulumsuyor painting. It sold for $8K at the auction. The highest price was about $30K and all 80 cows sold for at least $5K each. On camera I talked to Art Dealer Yahsi Baraz www.galeribaraz.com, auctioneer Turgay Artram www.antikas.com and Faruk Suren who was something to do with Galatasaray Football Club.

I have already logged my 'commitment' for Peace Day, Sunday 21 September 2008 on your www.peaceoneday.org website weeks ago when I first contacted you.

As for your limited resources, you have a small team! Congratulations. It's a small team more than I bleedin' have.

My dear fellow, I've been pushing this project for the best part of 10 years so I hardly think my moving forward depends upon involvement from Peace One Day. It is your project that requires a vehicle to go forward and I have one for you; you could include a photo of Rainbow Bridge or a link or at least talk to me, but never mind.

I have been at this far too long to tolerate polite rejection or kind words that amount to basically nothing. I am only interested in getting the job done and I was obviously mistaken in thinking you might help to do that.

Pakistani artist Amin Gulgee found his parents and a maid murdered at the family home in Karachi. Both Amin and his father, known simply as Gulgee, have been a huge influence upon my work and approach. I find Gulgee's paintings among the most exciting work I've personally seen in my lifetime. I have no other details other than news articles found on the net. Amin, my thoughts are with you. This is over whelmingly sad news...

Egemen Bey was a contact to the Prime Minister who informed us the Rainbow Bridge project was unlikely to happen under the AKP government.

NPP have been in Eskisehir for the Learning Turkish project. While there I was shown a film on YouTube including a Donald Duck offering prayers, the opening of a shop or store and the sacrifice of an animal in "celebration". What must be normal for many, I found rather bizarre and surreal.

Wednesday 19 September 2007 - Visited Eda Ozelmas, GM at TAV with Nilay. TAV management Ataturk Airport. Discussed a future exhibition. Eda was warm, welcoming and introduced us to Ebru Kantasi Mert, the airport architect. She also mentioned that Turkish TV programme maker Mr. Birol Guven is currently making a documentary at the airport, which might be an interesting parallel with the Learning Turkish project. Thursday 27 September 2007 - Oh dear, I had a drama at Garanti Bankasi in Taksim and the cash machine below centre was the start of the trouble...
I had to be removed from Garanti Bankasi by 2 policemen when I refused to leave the manager's office after the cash machine had swallowed 400YTL. Just after 15.47:38hr I was putting my card and receipt away, apparently 10 seconds went by and suddenly it swallowed back my money before my eyes.
After initial politeness, I soon realised that making a fuss was the only way to get this bank to take adequate action. What if I been in a rush to catch a flight? The staff suggested I come back the next morning, but that was not good enough and I was not going to risk leaving the matter should I get caught up in a bureaucratic machine and wait days for my money. What if the bank began questioning if I had already taken the money? I had no proof that I had not hidden 400YTL in cash unless there was a close-up CCTV of my transaction.
Despite an excellent personal relationship with my own HSBC branch manager, I have endured so many problems with HSBC international, so why would I suddenly trust Garanti Bankasi? My only goal was retrieving my cash what ever it took - so I made a fuss and insisted upon action.
Eventually I returned to the bank with the calm and serene Serin who organised the return of my cash by 6pm. I was a prat, but such is life.

Friday 04 May 2007 - Today NPP received notice of rejection from the 2007 Istanbul Art Biennale rejecting the Rainbow Bridge, Learning Turkish and the Peace at Home projects. Rejection communications read thus:

As the curator of the 10th International Istanbul Biennial... “Not Only Possible, But Also Necessary: Optimism in the Age of Global War”... considering the numerical and spatial restrictions as well as the necessities of the integrity of the exhibition, I regret to tell you that I was unable to integrate your work in the exhibition... The Turkish government has invested 5 million YTL to decorate the Bosporus Bridge with colourful lights and now the media are running stories about "red calls for suicide, the blazonry for accidents."

NPP (Ned Pamphilon Productions) have been proposing the Rainbow Bridge peace project for several years only to be denied by the Turkish authorities. This project was supported by German Chemical company BASF who costed the project at a maximum of €350,000 with no cost to the Turkish taxpayer; Rainbow Bridge would create a 24 hour visual experience; emphasise the theme of peace and collaboration; open the imagination of millions of children and adults alike; create an international story rather than an overly expensive domestic controversy; generate millions of YTL for the Turkish economy; create a perfect positive PR tool for the EU to appreciate; please see:

The mind-set of the Turkish authorities is so mind boggling. Ataturk understood "A nation without art has lost one of its lifelines." NPP activities continue regardless and independently to promote a wider positive awareness of Turkiye, but we truly cannot fathom why so much money is spent on a project generating such a limited impact.

At this moment in time it seems the AKP are going to walk into power with a new majority government while I can only report CHP leader Deniz Baykal continues to rant, rave and oppose. Turkey has had a major impact in inspiring NPP to creative urges, but recently the political atmosphere has induced bemused despondency and disillusionment.

The meeting anticipated the usual obstacles e.g. the rainbow colours looking like a Kurdish flag and upsetting Turkish ultra-nationalists. It is unlikely there will be positive response, but we keep trying. While the Germans are allegedly supporting Live Earth with €6million, the Turkish government are yet to announce support for the Istanbul event. Al Gore was interviewed by Larry King on CNN this week and mentioned Live Earth.

Saturday 07 April 2007 - Discovered Tribeca are using NPP imagery for their website http://www.tribeca.com.tr/ despite not seeking approval. NPP created this artwork for Tribeca's 1999 Seasonal Greetings card and they obviously assumed it is their right to use the image as and when they feel like. Solgar Vitamins have been using NPP artwork for years without a formal agreement. These matters can be addressed as and when I have the time and inclination.

Wednesday 11 April 2007 - NPP paintings were taken off the wall at The Marmara Pera. A change is as good as a rest. Beste Gursu's Art & Life organisation are taking over.

Friday 13 April 2007 - EDIT - In the Turkish Daily News International Airport contract, worth $300 million with additional jobs, was won by the family, who is chairman of the board of Construction Company, from the same town of have the contract to paint the an article (http://www.turkishdailynews.com.tr/article.php?enewsid=70442) reports a $250 million ArbilMak-YolCengiz Common Enterprise, created by Saffet Cebi, from the Black Sea area's famous CebiMak-Yol, and Mehmet Cengiz, owner of the CengizRize as Mesut Yılmaz and close friend to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Partners in the Black Sea Coastal Highway project, Cengiz and Mak-Yol are constructing water filtering facilities in Mapa and Arbil. NPP were told Mak-Yol Bosphorus Bridge grey. Mak-Yol! Why not try adding some colour into everyone's life?

NPP have written to Tribeca and the communication is relevant for anyone using NPP imagery......

This letter is appropriate for any party in Turkey or the wider world using or intending to use NPP imagery.

The reports ranged from 200,000 to 1,000,000 people attending the rally. PM Erdogan once served four months in prison in 1999 for reciting a two-line poem: "Minarets are our bayonets, domes are our helmets; mosques our barracks, believers our soldiers."
I guess this piece of history can return to haunt Erdogan for years to come.

Wednesday 18 April 2007 - The NPP film crew visited Galata Tower, Persembe Pazari, Galata Bridge, Eminonu, Spice Bazaar, Hasan Semerci at Adnan & Hasan carpet shop, the Blue Mosque (Mavi Cami) and Istiklal Caddesi (tram street).
It was such a positive day, yet the evening news was so depressing: 3 men were murdered at publishing house in Malatya:

The men had their throats cut apparently because they print Christian bibles. Istanbul Anglican Chaplain Ian Sherwood later supplied NPP with more detailed information regarding the 3 murdered Christians; be warned, it makes for stomach churning reading:
"Tilman was stabbed 156 times, Necati 99 times and Ugur's stabs were too numerous to count. They were disemboweled, and their intestines sliced up in front of their eyes. They were emasculated and watched as those body parts were destroyed. Fingers were chopped off, their noses and mouths and anuses were sliced open. Possibly the worst part was watching as their brothers were likewise tortured. Finally, their throats were sliced from ear to ear, heads practically decapitated."
I have often been advised not touch upon politics nor religion while undertaking artistic activities in Turkey, but goodness gracious me, how can these barbaric behaviour not be referenced? Human beings can be ghastly creatures.

Thursday 19 April 2007 - The Learning Turkish team visited the Ataturk Gulumsuyor portrait at Lutfi Kirdar, the GCV school in Fatih, Sultanahmet and Haydarpasa Railway Station via the Karakoy-Haydarpasa ferry.

Friday 20 April 2007 - The film team went to Ortakoy and joined a boat trip on the Bosphorus. Later we visited Cihangir and Tunel and in the evening restaurants and nightspots in Beyoglu.

Saturday 21 April 2007 - Tomorrow NPP will join a local Cihangir residents organisation to paint a wall with children to commemorate 23 April Children's Day http://www.cihangir.org.tr/. Currently, the wall is part of an area for dog owners to take their dogs to do what dogs must do.......poo.
The enclosure is rather smelly and the wall is covered in unseemly graffiti.Sunday 22 April 2007 - Although tomorrow is 23 April Children's Day, an activity for children in Cihangir was more practical to organised for Sunday. Gokce was on hand to film the activity.

Tuesday 24 April 2007 - Turkish Foreign Minister Abdulla Gul has been forwarded as the AKP's candidate for the next President of the Turkish Republic. PM Erdogan will remain head of an AKP majority government. The public debate continues between those who purport to greater religious freedom and those concerned about preserving the secular system.

Wednesday 25 April 2007 - The camera went to the Kasimpasi-Dolapdere football pitch regularly used by staff from The Marmara Pera. I joined them for a 6pm game to get footage for the film.

14 December 2006 - Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records, died. What an incredible contribution to contemporary culture this Turk made. He once phoned me to say he was looking at my 1999 Istanbul? Yeah! book and liked my paintings. Friday 15 December 2006 - NPP submitted "Peace @ Home, Peace in the World" project to TUSIAD; not that I expect much, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Wednesday 20 December 2006 - Yesterday the newspapers covered the funeral of Ahmet Ertegun. This evening NPP supplied an exhibition of paintings for the 2006 Xmas Ball at The Ciragan Kempinski Hotel. Demet hosted the evening introducing the various speakers and entertainment assisted by Ned as and when English translation was required. The event was for the benefit of Bizim Losemili Cocuklar Vakfi (Our-Children Leukaemia Foundation) and organised by Lori Blin, wife of Henry Blin, Ciragan Kempinski GM. The following day there was some press coverage in Sabah and Hurriyet newspapers.......
NPP sold 3 paintings, 2 during an auction, raising 21,500TL and 30% of sales generated for the Leukaemia Foundation.

25 December 2006 Xmas Day - Woke to hear of the passing of James Brown. Mr. Brown was a musical genius and I would have loved to have seen the implementation of the Rainbow Bridge Peace Project involve James Brown. Such is life - such is death.

A red holiday on Bosphorus as well as highways

Turks have been sacrificing animals to celebrate the Feast of Sacrifice Bayram and stained the Bosphorus waters with blood. The year's forthcoming events will be the election of a new President and government. At this stage it looks like PM Erdogan might become the new President while the AKP maintain a majority government. We may get to find out how the Turks cope with a First Lady wearing a head scarf. George Bush plans to send more troops into Iraq.
Arsenal are playing some wonderful football and provide NPP with hope for 2007.

Friday 19 January 2007 - A friend visited with news of an apparent assassination that afternoon in Sisli/Osmanbey area. Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink was shot in the street outside his office. He had received death threats presumably from nationalists because he campaigned for the recognition of the alleged genocide of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire. 31 January 2007 - NPP received the following rejection letter (dated 2006 strangely enough) from TUSIAD, The Turkish Industrialist's and Businessman's Association.......

I would like to kindly inform you that your project proposal about “Proposal for a Peace Project” conveyed to TUSIAD on 16 November 2006 has been evaluated by TUSIAD Country Communication Committee. We concluded that the content of your proposal is not in parallel with our communication strategy targeting European public opinion. With this evaluation in mind, we are sorry to decline your demand of support.

14 February 2007 - At last NPP collected all the revenue from the Xmas Ball at The Ciragan Kempinski and were able to pass 6,450 TL onto BLCV.

16 February 2007 - Visited Kemer Golf & Country Club. Despite suffering from on-coming flu I was collected and driven by 7ft ex-basketball professional Volkan to meet Kemer PR Yasemin.

Thursday 01 March 2007 - Met Kerem Akalin of Maker Arts to discuss the Learning Turkish project. Details of this language project are more fully documented under Learning Turkish. Is it all about quantum physics or further organised religious propaganda? It seemed to be about quantum physics.

Friday 09 March 2007 - The CNN Larry King Show discussed the film The Secret which apparently aligns quantum physics with God http://thesecret.tv/home.html. There were similar themes in The Bleep Do We Know, though The Secret appears to purport a greater emphasis on the God association than the Rabbit Hole.

Saturday 10 March 2007 - Internet users in Turkey regained access to the popular video-sharing website YouTube on Friday when a court revoked a ban imposed because a video clip submitted by a Greek user, allegedly insulted the country's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Friday 30 March 2007 - I attended a memorial service for Brian Brolly at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden, London. The Times reported on the memorial in the following days edition.
